Your website: Billboard or Machine?
June 20, 2019
Before you begin to build your website, it is important to decide which side of the digital fence you’d like to sit on. What is it you would like your website to do for you? Let’s get the hard part out of the way. Why do you need a website? Simple answer: Because everyone in the world from age 2 to 92 years old, is online. Your audience, your client, your target market is all online, and they are looking for you (but we will get into that more below). So now that you got the why, you got it right? Let’s talk about your goal. Billboard or Machine?
Wondering what I mean by billboard? Well I am glad you asked. If your website is there for you to direct people to it, in my Kanye humble like opinion, it is the equivalent of a billboard. It will display your pertinent information. It will give the user the things they need to know to contact, connect with, or work with your business. Your potential client can look, learn, shop, or buy. The issue? You had to give it to them. Remember above I said, they are looking for you. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with a billboard website if it fits your needs. But you must ask yourself, is it? Are you in this, whatever this may be, to provide your information? If not, you're looking for a machine.
Having your website turned into a machine will require the same things most machines require: Fuel, work, and sometimes repair. A website that runs like a machine has had the written content created to bring your clients to you. It is written, designed, and optimized in a way that will get your emails filled and your phones ringing. The written content is the fuel and optimization will be the work. Where is the repair you ask? It is in the upkeep. You will not be able to publish your website, even if it was written with the best SEO keywords, alternative tags, and metadata but never make changes to and within it. You can’t set it and forget it. These changes will help to maintain your relevance in this digital world. And believe me, big brother Google is always looking to rate your relevance (another story, for another blog, I promise it is coming soon).

Hosted by the university’s Department for Careers and Professional Development (DCAPD), the session brought together students from across disciplines who were eager to understand what digital marketing looks like in practice.

For Houston businesses, ranking on Google Maps is no longer optional — it’s essential. The Google Maps 3-Pack (the top three listings under the map) drives most of the calls, website visits, and directions requests when customers search “near me.” If you’re a Houston attorney, a home service provider, a medical practice, or a local restaurant, showing up in that 3-Pack means more business. The challenge is that competition is fierce. Every business in Houston wants visibility, but not all are optimizing for it. That’s where SEO marketing in Houston comes in. By focusing on local SEO tactics, you can push your Google Business Profile higher in search results, earn more clicks, and generate consistent leads. Here are seven proven steps to improve your Google Maps SEO in Houston.
